Time to Celebrate

It’s nearly a year already since Rowans Hospice launched its Silver Jubilee Appeal.

A lot has happened over the past twelve months! From small change to antique silver, donations from across our community have already been given to support Rowans Silver Jubilee Appeal, which aims to raise the money needed to totally refurbish the Hospice and undertake the necessary alterations to ensure we can continue to meet the changing care needs and demands of the community.

Commenting on the past year, Ruth White, Rowans CEO said:

“We want to thank everyone who has supported the Appeal so far. As always we are overwhelmed by the generosity and support that our community shows us.  It is their ongoing support that makes Rowans so special, as it is truly a community hospice.”

Ruth then added: “Rowans was built by the community for the community. The Silver Jubilee Appeal marks the next big step in our development. The changes we make to the fabric of the building will safeguard our ability to deliver outstanding care to those families in our community who need us. So it is fantastic that together we are building on our foundations to create a modernised hospice, fit to care for us and for future generations.”

Thank you to everyone who has supported the appeal so far, here are some of the best bits!

They donated £6,000 last September, only to donate a further £5487.57 a year later after holding a 12-hour darts, snooker and pool marathon fundraising event. The following companies have all taken on the corporate challenge, committing to raise £2,500 in one year for Rowans Silver Jubilee Appeal.  From arranging charity balls and golf days to donating every penny paid by diners for their evening meals and signing up a team to take on the Great South Run, local businesses have been amazing. To date they have raised nearly £56,038 towards the Appeal.

Sharing Stories

Through the partnerships with The News, Rowans has had the privilege to share the stories of so many people in our community that have or are being supported by them.

Their stories have given an insight into the level of care Rowans give and they have helped dispel myths, such as Rowans is just a place you go to die. They have also helped to inform people about the range of services and support that we offer to people in our community, from the moment of finding out that they or a loved one has a life limiting illness, to demonstrating the ongoing support Rowans give to family when a loved one dies.

Thank you to everyone that has shared their story. The News looks forward to sharing more stories from our community over the next year on Rowans’ monthly page.

Building Work Starts

Monday 29 July witnessed local contractors T Coleborn & Sons Ltd arrive on site at Rowans Hospice to start Phase 1 of the ambitious refurbishment project. The contractors are now already nine weeks in and significant progress has already been made, with the central courtyard already excavated and additional bedrooms added to replace those in the current patient entrance extension. The building work is anticipated to take 85 weeks to complete and will involve the total refurbishment and modernisation of the in-patient ward.
